The New Year

My hopes for 2008 are high, especially after the year I've been through. :-)

The things I plan to do in 2008:

Fully commit myself to the pushup/situp challenge.
Write at least one *quality* blog post each week.
Present at a technical user group at least once.
Continue to seek out new business and keep the pipeline full.
Attend CodeMash, Ann Arbor Day of .NET, Dayton/Cinci Code Camp and the West Michigan Code Camp.
Bring at least two of my "back-burner" ideas to fruition over the course of the year.
Spend some time with Wil before he gets married.

I'm sure there's more, but these are the things that bubbled to the top of the list. :-)

I was just reading through your blog after subscribing earlier today. Your list of things you plan to do in 2008 makes me realize that I need to make a similar list, since my list would be so similar to yours. That post is forthcoming, but I wanted to at least mention that I'm doing a push-up/sit-up challenge as well!

I'm not sure where I heard about the challenge, but it was some time last year and I sneakily sent myself a Jott reminder which I received at 12:01am on January 1st. After the first few days I decided to also add jumping-jacks to the challenge. They don't take much more time, but get my heart rate up much more than push-ups or sit-ups.

This morning I did 14 of each, and today is the first day where I actually had to cheat on my last one. I'm definitely not in shape and this challenge will be a difficult one, but it helps knowing that someone else like me is doing the same.

@Matt - what I did last year before falling off the wagon was to do the pushups/situps and then try to hit the treadmill for 20-30 minutes. That let me ease into the cardio portion of things.

James Bender suggested to me yesterday that doing push-ups every day doesn't give your muscles time to recover. He suggested that I should only do push-ups every other day, and add 2 each time. While it doesn't exactly hold to the challenge, I think it is still in the spirit of things.

When I get to the point where I'm still feeling sore in the evening from what I did that morning, I think I'll switch to this method.

@Matt - I agree with that. The challenge definitely gets tougher after the second month.

I would also say that ANYTHING you do that gets you off your ass and doing something physical is in the spirit of things. Taking walks at lunch, hitting the heavy bag are all good things to be doing even if you can't keep up on the pushups/situps.

I actually have some makeup pushups/situps to do, so I guess I should step away from my computer and do them, huh? :-)
